After several years of renting and tirelessly saving up a deposit, Maris Mercer finally has a beautiful home to call her own – and moved in last weekend. (13-14 Oct)
The 56-year-old, who works as a practice nurse, has purchased a two-bedroomed home at The Maltings development in Penwortham.
“It’s just been a brilliant experience from start to finish,” she gushed. “The team at Linden Homes have bent over backwards to help me and they’ve made the whole process so easy. I didn’t see how that would be possible as I work so many hours.”
Maris, who is single, had been renting in Penwortham and wanted to continue living there but was desperate to be a homeowner.
She had bought and sold houses previously, but this was the first experience of doing it alone.
“With just one wage I’ve found it so hard to get back on the property ladder. I didn’t want to rent for the rest of my life – that was never my long-term plan but seeing the prices go up and up, I didn’t think it was going to be possible to buy where I wanted to live.
“It was only by chance that I was walking past the estate with my daughter Katie, as it was being built and we both loved the style of the houses, so we went in to have a look.
“I have been saving for a long time and I had some money left aside from the sale of my previous house. When we heard that they were offering the homes at 80% of the market value, it seemed perfect for us.”
Maris bought her home under a scheme which offers local people on lower incomes the chance to buy a home for 80% of their market value. As a local nurse, Maris qualified for the scheme.
Maris and Katie are thrilled with her new bright and stylish home, which comprises a lounge, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms as well as a garden and parking spaces for two cars.
And, best of all, she says she is paying out the same amount to own as she did to rent.
She added: “I can’t praise the whole system enough, it’s just been fantastic. The new homes team and everybody involved have been amazing. It has all saved me so much time! I really can’t recommend Linden Homes enough. They are now like friends to Katie and I.”
