The leader of Wandsworth Council paid a visit to Linden Homes’ redevelopment of the former Battersea Police Station to add his voice to the recent chorus of approval for the scheme.
Cllr Ravi Govindia’s endorsement came a week after the award-winning housebuilder’s proposals for 46 high quality new homes were voted through unanimously by members of the authority’s planning committee on Thursday, May 8th.
The construction will not only provide new homes but will also save the historic and much-loved brick building from becoming derelict or knocked down. Adjacent Hyde Lane will also be transformed with a new road surface, paving and landscaping.
Cllr Govindia met representatives of Linden Homes when he arrived at the site in Battersea Bridge Road on Thursday May 15th. Ten of the homes will be affordable, shared-ownership starter properties for local people.
The former police station, which closed in 2013 but dates back to the 19th century, will be sensitively refurbished into apartments. It will be complemented with a fitting new three-storey contemporary addition fronting onto Hyde Lane.
Cllr Govindia said: “There are two key challenges for this site – preserve the historic main building and create the mix of new homes our community needs. Linden Homes’ plan delivers on both counts.
“The proposal will bring an empty and distinctive building back into use and comes with a contribution of more than half a million pounds towards improving local services as well as ten affordable homes for Wandsworth residents.
“This is not a listed building so it’s all the more pleasing that the developer opted for a sensitive conversation rather than demolition and new-build. Linden Homes clearly recognised the former police station’s historic value and listened carefully to the views of local residents, councillors and amenity groups.”
