Housing Developer Champions Workplace Mental Health In ‘wellbeing In Mind’ Event
14 Oct 2019

Last week (October 10th) saw workforces, individuals and charities raising awareness for World Mental Health Day. But for Linden Homes East Yorkshire (LHEY), mental health and wellbeing is considered every day of the year. Their annual ‘Wellbeing in Mind’ event, is one way the developer works to recognise workplace wellbeing.

LHEY have teamed up with Nuffield Health, Hälsa Wellbeing and other local suppliers to provide a whole host of activities including:

  • A ‘Feel Well’ chair massage
  • An ‘Eat Well’ hydration station
  • Blood pressure/cholesterol check
  • ‘Energise you’ session
  • Mental health awareness workshop

This is the second event of its kind which will see over 40 participants throughout the day.

Commenting on the event, organiser and PA to the Managing Director Gill Hardy says: “This has been a brilliant event that’s raised awareness of mental health and has seen many attendees going away with relaxed minds and more information. It’s great to work for a company that is so genuinely passionate about mental health in the workplace.”

The developer has also been offering employees the chance to attend a Mental Health First Aid course to increase their efforts of a healthy and happy workforce. So far, 12 members of staff have been trained as mental health first aiders.

Alex Rymer, Sales Executive, is one of the recently trained employees.

She explains: “I've suffered with mental health issues myself and having friends and family members who have suffered and even taken their own lives, I want to be able to help people.

“Linden Homes recognise and support colleagues who are suffering. By sending us on the course they’ve helped us to understand the complexity of mental health and enabled us to help and support others.

“We have been given a manual of exercises and contacts that can help people to balance their thoughts and we are able to direct them to relevant experts who can assist them further.”

With The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development survey finding the below, it’s evident workplaces need to do more to look after their staff.

  • 37% of sufferers are more likely to get into conflict with colleagues
  • 57% find it harder to do multiple tasks
  • 80% find it difficult to concentrate
  • 62% take longer to do any task
  • 50% are less patient with customers/clients

Linden Homes East Yorkshire will continue their campaign for better mental health in the workplace and look forward to an even better wellbeing event in 2020.
