Brandon Lewis MP, Minister of State for Housing and Planning, was keen to see the regeneration of Devonport when he visited Linden Homes and DCH’s Emerge development in Plymouth.
The Minister met representatives from Linden Homes and its parent company, Galliford Try, DCH and Plymouth City Council, along with the Homes and Communities Agency. These partners have been working together on the regeneration of Devonport since 2006 and have already created award winning developments, Gun Wharf and Evolve locally.
While the focus of the discussion was on Emerge and the regeneration of Devonport, the conversation was wide-ranging and included the success of Help to Buy, modern methods of construction and the continuing skills shortages in the industry.
Housing and Planning Minister Brandon Lewis said: “We want to ensure anyone who aspires to own their own home has the opportunity to do so and I am pleased to see that Emerge is helping contribute to that and the wider regeneration of Devonport.
“Our initiatives like this have so far helped 291,000 people to buy and I want to see many more people in the area taking up this opportunity.”
The development has proved very popular and the Help to Buy scheme has played a significant role, with over 50 per cent of homebuyers having used Help to Buy since Emerge was launched in February 2015.
Stephen Teagle, divisional managing director for affordable housing and regeneration at Galliford Try, said: “We were very pleased to welcome Mr Lewis to Emerge, which enabled us to discuss important industry issues. The scheme, together with other initiatives in the area, is playing a key role in establishing a new balanced and sustainable community within Devonport. Emerge shows what can be done when you work collaboratively and marks the final phase of Linden Homes and DCH’s work in the Devonport Development Framework.”
Paul Crawford, group chief executive at DCH, said: “We were glad of the opportunity to show Mr Lewis the outcome of the work put into the Devonport regeneration at Emerge. We took the opportunity to talk about the history of the project and some of the other significant work DCH does in the area, including supported housing projects such as Devonport Views. It was good to see how aware the Housing Minister was of the skills and labour shortages challenging the housing sector, and to hear some of the ideas the government has to address these.”
Providing 101 new homes, Emerge is a contemporary development of two bedroom apartments, plus two and three bedroom houses with parking. Regenerating the Granby Street area in Devonport, Emerge has seen the demolition of post war buildings and the creation of new homes within a refreshed street scene.
Ian Knight, head of area at the Homes and Communities Agency, commented: “It’s great to see first-hand how the scheme is benefitting the local community and how successful the partnership approach has been. The development is nearing completion and has significantly gentrified the area, creating quality homes for the people of Plymouth.”
