A former interior designer has swapped inside for outside, rising through the ranks at a local housebuilder to become assistant site manager at a new housing development in Deeping St James.
Elaine Mumby, 35, started off as a trainee with Linden Homes 18 months ago, after a career first in interior design and then in customer care with a small building company.
She’s now assistant site manager at Springfields, Linden Homes’ forthcoming development in the village.
Elaine said: “I originally studied interior design at Leeds College of Art and Design and from then worked designing bars and interiors. I then moved to work for a small building company where I was office based and worked in customer care.
“I chose to move to Linden Homes to work for a bigger company and also to take on a role that gets me out of the office and onto the site, where I can fix issues that I was hearing about whilst doing my old customer care job myself.
“This job involves a lot of problem solving on a day-to-day basis. Because I have been able to work in a number of positions within this sector, I am able to use my knowledge from my previous jobs to help with any current challenges I may now face.”
Over the past 18 months, Elaine has also been able to access courses that will help her develop her career.
She said: “I still want to carry on progressing in my career and one day become a site manager, maybe even a production manager.
“Because Linden Homes is a bigger company than anywhere I’ve worked before, I’m able to gain more experience and I have plenty of opportunity to get my hands dirty.
“Linden Homes also has a great training programme which has enabled me to take part in a range of courses from first aid to an SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) course.
“As an employer Linden Homes is keen on its staff to get hands-on experience and, more-so than any other company I have worked for, they push the career progression of staff through training courses.”
Elaine has recently returned to work after being on furlough and is enjoying being back on site.
She said: “Since returning to work I have visited a few sites and it’s great to see everybody working so well as a team and seeing group morale remaining up as well.”
Elaine’s dedication to the job extends beyond her responsibilities on site. She recently put forward the name Judith Gardens for Linden Homes’ new development in Sawtry after hearing the company was looking for suggestions.
She said: “I did a bit of research into the history of Sawtry and found out that the village parish is named after Judith of Lens – the niece of William the Conqueror, who built her a manor in Sawtry. I thought, given the history behind the village, Judith Gardens would make a fitting name.
“It felt great to have the name I suggested chosen.”
Linden Homes is building a range of three and four-bedroom houses at Springfields in Deeping St James.
