First-time Buyer City Worker Secures Her Own Space At Salters Yard
01 Feb 2013

Buying her first home in an area she loves was the ideal result for 27-year-old City worker Harriet Stevens who spent six months property-hunting before seizing the opportunity to buy off-plan at Salters Yard in fashionable Bermondsey in central London.

Harriet, who grew up in Cheshire, has lived in the capital since 2007 having graduated from Loughborough University, but she recently found herself losing patience with the compromises and expense of renting.

While she waits for her stylish two-bedroom apartment to be made ready, she is living in the Tower Hill/Aldgate area. But when moving day comes, relocating to Bermondsey will actually be a return to a neighbourhood she already knows very well.

“I previously lived in Bermondsey renting and I wanted to move back to that area,” explained Harriet. “It’s lovely and for central London it is great – it feels more like a community and there are nice bars, restaurants, shops and tennis courts. You’re close to the River Thames and there are lots of lovely streets.

“It’s exciting now the contracts have been exchanged. You can start focussing on the more exciting parts of buying a new home like the decorating! It will be nice to have a place of my own – being able to decorate as you want, have things to your taste and style, and have your own space.”

Salters Yard is a superb collection of 21 high specification brand new properties made up of four houses and an impressive range of one and two-bedroom apartments, most of which have already sold off-plan to quick-thinking buyers like Harriet.

The location, in trendy Bermondsey’s conservation area, enjoys superb transport links and is within strolling distance of the South Bank and its alluring array of attractions, markets, parks, cafes, restaurants and nightlife, and only a 15-minute walk from London’s famous new landmark: the Shard.

Harriet continued: “London is obviously the main place to be for finance and having to work here I prefer to live centrally. I work in Bank which is about a 25-minute walk from Salters Yard.

“I was looking at a range of different properties on the market but there was a limited choice with the right price and very few things came up at all in Bermondsey. So this new-build was quite appealing, plus you do not have to do any work when you move in.

“I think that for the area it was a reasonable price and the high spec is very good. There are a few other places around with a smaller price tag, but not many reasonably priced two-bedroom apartments.”

After the frustrating six-month search, the experience of buying her first home has been relatively pain-free. Linden Homes eased the way with a “good service”, and she advised: “Buying new means not having a chain and it just makes it all much easier.”

Salters Yard has sparked huge interest, with enviable transport links into the City and further afield. Bermondsey Tube Station is nearby, London Bridge less than 20 minutes’ walk away and Waterloo six minutes by tube. City airport is only 30 minutes by train or tube and Heathrow airport is just 43 minutes by tube.

Another stand-out attraction of Salters Yard has been the top quality finishes coming as standard such as granite worktops, a choice of fully fitted kitchens, Karndean flooring and AEG appliances. Many of the apartments and all of the houses benefit from terraces or winter gardens, plus a beautifully designed communal courtyard.

The area is perfect for young professionals – as well as investors with an eye on premium rents – as it boasts attractions such as Borough Market, one of London’s largest food markets, set in the back drop of Southwark Cathedral, as well as Shad Thames and Butler’s Wharf, with their trademark cobbled streets lined by bars, coffee shops and restaurants.
