The team behind the development of the former Fair Mile Hospital in Cholsey, now known as Cholsey Meadows, received the praise of a government minister following a visit last week.
The Conservative MP for Wantage and Didcot and the Minister for Culture, Communications and Creative Industries, Ed Vaizey visited the scheme, which is being developed by Housebuilder of the Year, Linden Homes, on Friday 21 September as part of his work in the constituency. The development of the site, owned by the national housing and regeneration agency, the HCA, will see 354 new open market and affordable homes provided, including the refurbishment of the former hospital buildings, together with retail and public open space.
After receiving an update on the development’s progress including discussions regarding the refurbishment of building for use by the newly established Development Trust, Mr Vaizey was accompanied on a tour of the site by Linden Homes’ technical director, Jeremy Alden and sales and marketing director, Simon Pendlebury. During the visit, the MP met a carpenter apprentice; one of many who have worked on the development over the past 2 years.
Mr Vaizey, who was also shown the site’s original cricket pavilion, which Linden Homes has sensitively restored as part of its work for the Community Development Trust, commented:
“I think this is a magnificent scheme and was impressed with the development completed so far. Sites such as this present excellent opportunities to provide new and sustainable communities but it is how they are delivered that is crucial to their future success. Cholsey Meadows seems to be a prime example of how to get such projects right.
Mr Vaizey added:
“I was particularly pleased to hear about Linden Homes’ apprenticeship scheme, which is a key focus for the Government, as well as the work the company is doing in partnership with the Cholsey Development Trust. I very much look forward to seeing the completed development.”
Jeremy Alden, Linden Homes’ technical director, who has been overseeing the project said:
“The team was delighted that Mr Vaizey could spare the time to visit the scheme and after the hard work that has been carried out so far, we were especially pleased to receive his positive feedback. We look forward to completing this exciting and unique scheme and to continuing our partnership and work with the Homes and Communities Agency and the Development Trust.”
