A Retirment So Luxurious You Might Think You're On Holiday!
09 May 2012

Embraced by countryside, surrounded by luxury, and with a tempting range of activities, attractions and good old-fashioned fun, residents of Wispers Park might have to remind themselves that they’re at home and not on holiday.

Award-winning Linden Homes are marketing this stunning new development, on the doorstep of the Surrey town of Haslemere, as exclusively for people aged 60 and over and is guaranteed to make them the envy of younger friends and family, and ultimately provide the retirement they deserve.

Set within a 17-acre country park, the development has 30 one and two-bed apartments shared between three buildings whose residents are entitled to free membership of a traditional country club housed separately within the impressive Grade II listed Oak Hall. It also has a 54-bed care home, Buckton Manor, for those who need extra support.

Oak Hall has a breathtaking range of facilities: from luxury spa treatments, a tennis club and fully-equipped gym to a full service bar, bistro and evening events.

A day might start with a stroll thought the bluebell woods and a browse of the library, before taking in a croquet game, gentle workout or tennis knock-up, and end with drinks overlooking the gardens with friends, a film night or dinner dance.

But residents are in no way limited to the array of options on their doorstep as Wisper Park’s location is just two miles from bustling Haslemere and also close to the range of shopping, dining and culture enjoyed by Guildford to the north, Midhurst to the south, and Liphook to the west.

Plus, the 50-minute express train journey from Haslemere’s mainline station to London makes it an inviting launchpad to enjoy all the excitement of the capital’s premier shopping, restaurants, theatre-land and year-round cultural highlights.

Road links are good too with the major link road between London and Portsmouth on the south coast, the A3, just a few miles to the west. Bus services connect Haslemere to Guildford, Godalming, Farnham, Chichester, Bognor Regis and neighbouring villages.

The Elizabethan-style hall’s architecture mirrors the natural beauty of the area, with woodland and heath framing its imposing two-storeys, built for Scottish landscape and portrait painter, James Coutts Michie in 1911.

It retains many of its original features inside and out, including mahogany panels, marble floors, heraldic stained glass and extravagant fireplaces, topped with tall brick chimney stacks.

The homes are appointed with top quality flooring and granite worktops to reflect the site’s traditional feel, mixed with the latest energy-saving appliances and luxury bathroom fittings.

This incarnation of the site as Wispers Park is the latest in a rich history which goes back to at least 1799 when it was known as Puckshott Farm. The connection with the Michie family ended when Oak Hall and its grounds were sold in 1938 to Miss Voya and Miss Keyte-Perry, who had been running a school on the estate since 1925.

It became Wispers School, and from 1941 right up until 2008 ran as an independent boarding and day school for girls. Its motto was Forfiter Fideliter Feliciter – Bravely, Faithfully, Happily.

Novelist Angela Lambert attended the school in the 1950s, with a fictionalised account appearing in her 1990 novel ‘No Talking After Lights’. Another notable student was Susannah York.

Linden Homes Guildford managing director Peter Youll said: “With splendid developments such as Wispers Park working in partnership with Manor Care, we are strengthening our reputation for leading in quality, distinctive homes which respect and enhance their surroundings and community.

“These homes offer people aged 60 or over the beauty of the local countryside, tradition and history mixed with the vibrancy of the activities on offer and the modern advantages of homes built to the highest standard.”
