The Mayor Launches The Camo-mile Community Challenge With St John's Primary School
14 Mar 2017

The Mayor of Totnes, Councillor Eleanor Cohen officially opened a new path and launched the town’s Camo-Mile Challenge, along with pupils from St John’s Primary School, at a community event at the Camomile Lawn development.

Linden Homes created a path from Home Reach Avenue (just off Weston Lane) to link its new homes at Camomile Lawn with Steamer Quay and a mile-long route has been made so people can time themselves.

Entrants can choose if they’ll walk, run, or cycle the course and each group will be entered into a draw for a chance to win one of five £200 prizes to their community group/nominated charity/school. There will also be a prize of £200 for the most unusual way to complete the route – anything goes – from unicycle to samba dancing!

Brian Deacon, sales and marketing director for Linden Homes, said: “The launch was a huge success. Councillors, residents and local business people joined the 40 pupils at the inaugural event to open the new path and walk the Camo-Mile route, with refreshments provided by local company, The Kitchen Table.”

Brian added: “The new path will benefit the whole of Totnes as it provides easy access to town and encourages people to leave their cars at home. We’ve been thrilled to welcome school children, the Totnes Ramblers, Totnes RFC and the Alzheimer’s Association to name a few, and we’re encouraging others to take part.”

The Mayor of Totnes, Councillor Eleanor Cohen said: “I was extremely pleased to open the path and see the local community enjoying it. It’s a wonderful link that benefits the whole of Totnes and I expect it will be very popular.”

Sarah Cate, deputy headteacher at St John’s Primary School said: “The children from Totnes St John's were thrilled to be invited to the launch of the Camo-Mile and embraced the challenge with enthusiasm, even the uphill climb! The walk way is fantastic for enabling people to access the river and the challenge was a brilliant way to involve the community in the opening of the path. The children received healthy snacks and a goodie bag on completion of the challenge and returned to school content and very pleased with their achievement, after walking it in a speedy 12 minutes and 54 seconds. I am sure we will take the opportunity to use the path to access the riverside for future learning."

Anyone can enter the Camo-Mile Community Challenge, the only restrictions are that you need to:

  • book in advance
  • enter on behalf of a local charity, club/organisation or school
  • take part before 30th March
  • ensure your time is logged

Brian added: “Entry is free, if you would like to take part then please email camo-milechallenge@lindenhomes.co.uk to book your place. The times will be recorded in the sales and marketing suite, where you will also be able to enter the prize draw. We’re delighted to have launched the Camo-Mile Community Challenge, and we’re keen to see the path being well used.

“Sustainability is important to us and at Camomile Lawn we are creating allotments and we have a Local Travel Plan that is about to be rolled out. It provides our residents with local information and energy saving benefits, including a bike voucher to encourage people to cycle or walk more – and this path will help make that possible.”
