Supported Homes Scheme Underway
14 Jul 2015

Work has begun in Ormesby on a small, purpose built housing project for people with learning disabilities.

Spencerbeck supported housing development will provide a new and innovative housing choice, offering 12 high quality, spacious, one-bedroomed homes to rent. Residents will receive an assessed care package, with the potential for 24-hour onsite support, allowing them to live as independently as possible.

The homes will be built to a high specification with additional services tailored to meet the individual needs of the residents.

Partnering Coast & Country in the Redcare venture are Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and developer Galliford Try Partnerships North – supported with a £5 million grant from the Homes and Communities Agency.

Anthony Brown, Director of Property and Developments with Coast and Country, said: “Everyday life at Spencerbeck will offer residents the opportunity to live independently and be part of a safe and supportive community.

“We are very proud to be a part of this exciting and much-needed scheme designed to provide extra-care accommodation to those who need it most.”

Cllr David Walsh, Cabinet Member for Adults at Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, added: “This plan to build new accommodation for members of the community with learning disabilities cements our commitment to ensuring a good quality of life for all the residents of our borough.

“We, alongside Coast & Country and housing construction company Galliford Try, hope that these developments can benefit our community for years to come.”

Nathan Walker, Commercial Manager with Galliford Try Partnerships North, said: “We are delighted to have been selected to work on this initiative, which we are confident will improve the quality of life for the residents.

“Partnerships with the region’s social landlords, to develop high quality housing, form an increasing proportion of the £40 million worth of development which we will undertake during 2015.”

The company was selected ahead of three other shortlisted bidders for the programme, not just on price but also because of its focus on partnership working, social value outputs and a strong commitment to building information modelling, which will assist Coast & Country to make important design decisions prior to construction – reducing the time spent on site and saving expenditure.
