Linden Homes Western has announced that Severn Area Rescue Association (SARA) will be its charity of the year for 2019/20.
Established in 1973, SARA runs inshore lifeboats and conducts search and rescue operations on land and water for a wide area around the River Severn. There are five lifeboat and rescue stations at: Newport, Beachley, Sharpness, Tewkesbury and Wyre Forest, covered by 200 volunteers, who train on Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings.
Mark Carwardine from the charity said: “SARA needs to raise over £130,000 each year to cover our running costs, which include fuel, insurance, equipment maintenance and communications. We’re the largest all-volunteer search and rescue team in the country and entirely depend on donations and our own fundraising. We’re delighted that Linden Homes has selected us as its charity of the year, every pound makes such a difference and enables the team to focus on improving our services.
“Last year, SARA attended 109 callouts and we aim (and so far have) launched a lifeboat within 15 minutes, 365 days of the year, regardless of the time. We’re incredibly proud of the organisation and its lifesaving work.”
Sarah Sperring from Linden Homes said: “Everyone at SARA is a volunteer, they have no paid staff and rely on people from all walks of life: builders, electricians, IT managers, accountants, paramedics, nature reserve managers, to donate their spare time to help others.
“We will do our best to raise as much money for this very worthwhile charity as we can, from golf days to dress down Fridays, bake sales to cycle rides; we can definitely make a difference.”
