Raising Money For Children's Hospice: No Get Out Of Jail Free Card For Linden Homes Director
01 Jun 2017

Linden Homes Western commercial director, James Hurford has raised £3,140 in bail money for the company’s charity of the year, Children’s Hospice South West.

James participated in the charity’s Jail and Bail event in Bristol on 19th May and was one of seven jailbirds, including a banker, a lawyer and a reverend. The entertaining event saw fundraisers arrested, charged with their fictitious crimes, and then placed on trial.

Convicted for crimes against humour and tasked with raising £999, James spent the day in court until he was bailed out by his friends, contacts and colleagues. Linden Homes’ managing director, Chris Harris, commented: “When James is at work he is extremely focussed and doesn’t have time for comedy - he’s renowned for being grumpy and having a dry sense of humour.

“His colleagues thought a bit of time inside may help him reflect on some simple jokes and appreciate that a bit of humour is not a crime! He is the Jack Dee of commercial directors and we said he shouldn’t be released until he could tell at least five jokes with a smile!”

James added: “The event was extremely well organised and was a lot of fun. We are doing our best to raise as much money for this very worthwhile charity as we can, from golf days to dress down Fridays, bake sales to cycle rides, to ensure we make a difference. Some colleagues recently completed the three peaks challenge and raised over £900.”

Janey Hellmen, corporate partnerships fundraiser for Children’s Hospice South West, said: “Jail and Bail was such fun and together the gang raised a staggering £24,264 for Children’s Hospice South West. As a charity, we need to raise more than £9 million a year in order to run our three hospices and we are almost entirely funded by voluntary donations, so each and every penny raised makes a huge difference to the families we support. We are extremely grateful to Linden Homes for helping us to continue to make the most of short and precious lives.”

Children’s Hospice South West has three hospices near Bristol and in Devon and Cornwall. The hospices offer care for life-limited children and their families, and provide much-needed respite support helping to create precious family memories.
