Public Art Display To Be Created In Harwell

Vistry Group has appointed a Midlands-based arts partnership to produce public artwork for its new Harwell housing location as part of a planning agreement for the site.

The housebuilder, which is delivering new properties at Linden Homes’ Didcot Grove development at the eastern edge of the village, has commissioned artists Julie Edwards and Ron Thompson of Planet Art to deliver the project.

Married couple Julie and Ron, who have worked together for the past 20 years creating public art across the UK and Europe, are currently researching the area and looking at various sources for inspiration.

The project is in its early stages and, as part of the process, they are keen to liaise with local residents to discuss ideas for the public artwork.

Julie said: “It’s great to have been taken on board to produce a unique public art piece for Vistry’s new site off Didcot Road in Harwell.

“We’re still in the early stages of planning and are busy researching the area. So far, we’ve been examining the local fauna and flora, the famous Harwell cherries and local orchards, as well as the Diamond Light Source centre at Harwell science and innovation campus.

“We’ve been drawing up lots of ideas but are keen to hear from local residents on their thoughts for the piece, because it will ultimately impact them the most.”

Alix Laflin, marketing manager for Vistry Thames Valley, said: “We are really pleased to have partnered with Julie and Ron at Planet Art to deliver this public art scheme, which is part of the planning permission for Didcot Grove.

“A lot of hard work and dedication has already gone into the project, and we are looking forward to residents getting involved and putting forward some of their own ideas.

“We already can’t wait to see the finished result, which we hope residents and the general public will get to enjoy for many years to come.”

Vistry is building 49 properties for private sale and 27 affordable homes for rent or shared ownership at Linden Homes’ Didcot Grove. This includes a mix of one to five-bedroom houses and apartments.

The first residents are expected to move into Didcot Grove this summer.
