With signs of spring well and truly here, youngsters at a school in Blunham have been inspired by nature on their doorstep to design new homes with a difference.
In support of this year’s Big Garden Birdwatch, pupils at the John Donne C of E Primary School were challenged to get creative; with their feathered friends in mind – and design a bird house!
The school teamed up with Linden Homes Midlands and some 80 children were invited to draw or paint their perfect bird house.
The school itself is a ‘forest school’, with its own wildlife area on the school playing field; led by the children who plant things, enjoy making hide outs and generally appreciate nature around them.
The bird house project formed part of this initiative, with plans to build the winning design and display it in the school grounds.
The tough task of judging the incredible designs fell to Linden Homes Midlands sales executive Weronika Maslak, who handed out a number of prizes including Amazon vouchers and animal encyclopaedias for the best efforts. Prizes went to Zoe, Elle-Mai, Samuel, Lilly, Amelia and Madeleine.
She said: “I was so very impressed by all the wonderfully creative designs. It is clear that not only do these children have a great imagination, but they care deeply about nature and wildlife.”
Headteacher Judi Johnson-Clark said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this project, and fully embraced it with their creative thinking and artistic skills. It was a very fitting competition given the school’s love of nature and wildlife.
“Our huge thanks to Linden Homes for organising the competition and to Weronika who visited us to look through the many impressive designs.”
Last year, Linden Homes Midlands sponsored the village’s Rose Queen Fete as part of its ongoing community engagement with the school and local area. The house builder is currently building a range of family-friendly three, four and five-bedroom homes at the Hastings Gardens development in Blunham.
