Linden Homes Launches Sustainability Drive With Linden Homes Foundation (South East)
31 May 2012

Leading housebuilder, Linden Homes, has launched a new sustainability drive designed to support the local community, the people living there and the local environment.

The Linden Homes Foundation has been created by the company to ensure the wider benefits of its developments can be felt through the communities in which it works.

To mark the launch, pupils from Woodfield School in Merstham, Surrey donned hard hats and high visibility jackets as they helped to build a wall at Linden Homes’ Water Colour development in Redhill.

During the visit, the geography class learnt all about staying safe around building sites and the importance of new build homes to their local area.

Terri Wyse, English Coordinator and Geography Teacher at Woodfield School said: “The children had a very enjoyable afternoon and they learnt a great deal from the visit. By seeing, experiencing and doing, the children now have a greater understanding of the building process, health and safety and the impact that the new build properties have on the local area.”

Linden Homes is currently undertaking the final phase of construction at the development which includes a number of community facilities and is nestled beside a peaceful lagoon forming part of the Surrey Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve.

Steve Bangs, managing director of Linden Homes South East, said: “At Linden Homes, we work hard to invest in local communities to ensure our developments have a wider impact on local people than the benefits of just building new homes themselves.

“Giving pupils the chance to put on the health and safety clothing, and help in the construction of a small part of the development is a fun way of helping them to understand the hazards on construction sites and the value of new homes to the local area.

“Engaging with the future generation of the workforce from an early age is also crucial to the construction industry as a whole. The sector has a huge impact on employment which stretches far beyond the site to the local economy through suppliers and subcontractors. We hope we’ve inspired some of the young people we met by showing how they can make a real difference to the development of their local community.”

Through the Foundation, the company pledges to invest time and money in an array of local activities whose benefits could be felt even before plans are drawn up, and beyond when the last property is sold.

By offering assistance in three key areas: people and customers; environment and sustainability; and communities, Linden Homes is taking a national lead in pushing for sensitive and sustainable development that goes beyond traditional attitudes.

The Foundation will encourage its own employees, as well as, contractors and local people to get involved and underpin Linden Homes’ commitment to bring wider benefits to the places where it secures new housing.

For example, apprenticeships will be offered to local youngsters to leave a legacy of skills once the builders have left, old habitats reinvigorated to attract back wildlife, and organisations given a helping hand to grow and thrive.

Steve Bangs, managing director south east, based at Guards Avenue, Caterham, said: “Among the greatest challenges we face as a business is to ensure our developments have wide reaching benefits which can be felt long after the homes we build have been sold. That’s why we’ve launched a formal commitment under the Linden Homes Foundation banner, which demonstrates our commitment to our own employees, local people, our customers and the environment.”

The Linden Homes Foundation projects will be publicised via the website to demonstrate its progress around the country and show how central the philosophy is to Linden Homes.

Linden Homes’ Water Colour development in Redhill currently has four bedroom townhouses and one and two bedroom apartments.
