Linden Homes And The Chichester Development Trust Host School Visit To Graylingwell Park
23 Jun 2014

School trips are not new but instead of using historic houses, over 100 pupils of Bishop Luffa School recently visited Graylingwell Park to find out about this sustainable, modern, new development, one of the UK’s largest carbon neutral developments.

As well as hosting a tour of the houses at Graylingwell Park, developed by a partnership between Linden Homes, Affinity Sutton and the Homes & Communities Agency, the pupils were taken around the energy centre; the combined heat and power plant is located adjacent to the water tower that provides enough heating and water to all the homes through gas-fed, low carbon technology.

Linden Homes technical director David Evans and technical manager Gavin Bourne, also gave a talk on the scheme’s sustainable credentials while Sarah Rance Riley and Tim Morgan, representatives of the Chichester Community Development Trust, gave a talk on the history and heritage of Graylingwell Hospital.

The year 10 geography students from Bishop Luffa School also completed various fieldwork projects around the development including a traffic count, noise pollution survey and environmental impact survey.

Natalie Flint, sales and marketing director of Linden Homes, comments: “We’re extremely proud of this development which is renowned for winning awards for its sustainability. We’re delighted that it was chosen for the school project and hope it offered the children an exciting and unusual school trip that they will remember for years to come.

“Our work with the local community surrounding Graylingwell Park is particularly important to us and we hope that students at Bishop Luffa School will continue to come in future years.”

Jane Paget, geography team leader of Bishop Luffa School, says: “The Graylingwell Park development acted as a great location for our Year 10 geographers to investigate a sustainable community in action. Our pupils created their own data collection sheets to study the sustainable community and then recorded information on these sheets at different areas during their fieldwork trip. Pupils had very informative talk from Linden Homes and the Chichester Development Trust allowing them to gain a clear understanding about the background to the development for their assessment work.  The site proved a smashing environment for our pupils to learn about Graylingwell’s sustainable community.”

On the site of the former hospital, Graylingwell Park is just a mile from Chichester’s city centre and is set in 85 acres of gloriously green parkland listed by English Heritage as Historic Parkland. When complete, the development will comprise 750 new and converted homes, 40% will be affordable housing, along with an array of amenities to benefit the new residents and the wider Chichester community.

Both the new build homes and the converted homes in the old period hospital buildings at Graylingwell Park incorporate an array of green features, such as photovoltaic roof panels, high level insulation and energy-efficient appliances, as well as integrated recycling bins and water butts. Domestic boilers are not required in the homes, and because the excess power generated from the energy centre will be fed back into the national grid, it means homeowners’ energy bills should be lower.

The first two phases of homes have been extremely popular at Graylingwell Park and the third phase of homes, comprising newly built homes and refurbished homes, has now launched. The Government scheme Help to Buy will be available. The sales and marketing suite and the showhomes are open daily 10am to 5pm. Please contact Linden Homes on 01243 781494 for further information.

There is also a selection of homes available through shared ownership by Affinity Sutton. For more information, contact Affinity Sutton on 0300 100 0303 or email, alternatively visit the website:
