Inspiring the next generation of builders at The Oaks

Year four and five pupils from Chudleigh Knighton Church of England Primary School visited The Oaks development in Chudleigh to find out more about the housebuilding process.

As well as a tour of the Linden Homes site – taking in the various build stages – the 29 students learnt about health and safety, watched a bricklaying demonstration and had a chance to try out the new skill, which they all embraced.
The site team explained what was involved in building a new homes development and discussed the variety of work done on site, from plumbing and carpentry to bricklaying and decorating.

Headteacher, Simon Westwood, commented: “We are really committed to engaging and inspiring our children by providing them with a curriculum that incorporates purposeful learning experiences. This has formed a central part of our personal development offer as a school. The aim of this visit was to illustrate different employment pathways and opportunities as well teaching our pupils about the various crafts and skills used in the construction industry.

“For our children, being able to actually see a house in construction and talk to a wide range of trades about their roles really brought this learning experience to life beyond the classroom. The children were very excited and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the development. A huge thanks to the team for facilitating this visit.”

Emma Mackay from Linden Homes said: “We were delighted to welcome the pupils to The Oaks. The children were enthusiastic and it was wonderful to see them so engaged – I think we answered over 100 questions and hope we’ve inspired a few budding builders!

“With International Women’s Day on 8th March, it was a great opportunity to talk to the children about all the different career paths and jobs available – especially those that you’re not necessarily aware of when you’re younger – such as technical manager, quantity surveyor and engineer.”

Emma was joined by Gareth Neale, build director; Lee Summerfield, site manager; Alex Kittle, assistant site manager; Hayley Wright, sales consultant; Kimberley Heywood-Cann, senior quantity surveyor; Georgia Brierley, technical manager; and the bricklaying demonstration was from Charlie at Contour Brickwork.

Linden Homes is creating 229 new two, three and four bedroom homes in Chudleigh.
