HRH The Duke Of Gloucester Plants Commemorative Tree At Greyfriars Quarter
17 Oct 2016

His Royal Highness The Duke of Gloucester met with local councillors, residents, school pupils and the team behind Linden Homes’ Greyfriars Quarter development in Gloucester to plant a tree to mark its new beginning and to commemorate the crowning of King Henry III.

The Duke of Gloucester was visiting the city to celebrate the 800th anniversary of King Henry III’s coronation at St Peter’s Abbey. The abbey had been built from Dawn Redwood trees that populated the Greyfriars Quarter site all those years ago.

Key representatives from Gloucester City Council, Linden Homes and the Homes and Communities Agency were there to welcome The Duke of Gloucester, along with Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Gloucestershire, the High Sheriff of Gloucestershire, the Mayor of Gloucester, local residents, pupils from St Paul’s Church of England Primary School and a local historian.

Chris Harris, managing director for Linden Homes Western, said: “We were extremely proud to donate a Dawn Redwood tree for The Duke of Gloucester to plant to commemorate King Henry lll’s coronation. The tree was planted at Linden Homes’ Greyfriars Quarter development and we’re delighted to have been involved in such a historic event.”

Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council, said: “I am absolutely thrilled that The Duke of Gloucester visited the city. We’re currently underway on so many exciting projects and it was great to show him the vision we have for our city. The Duke planting a commemorative tree marked his visit perfectly and I hope he was just as pleased with the redevelopment as we are.”

David Warburton from the Homes and Communities Agency said: “Greyfriars Quarter is a fantastic development and the event has been a wonderful way to pay homage to the site’s interesting history.”

King Henry lll was the last monarch to be crowned outside of Westminster Abbey and was only nine years old at his coronation.

Karl Tchibe, also nine years of age, from St Paul’s Primary School, attended the event and reflected on how he would have felt: “I would have been so excited but I don’t think I would have been ready to be king aged nine!”

Greyfriars Quarter is a well-designed new development of one and two bedroom apartments, plus three and four bedroom homes, located in the very heart of Gloucester.
