Moving house can be an exciting and in some cases, a life changing experience – particularly if it’s into a brand new home.
With a blank canvas on which to put your own stamp and style, and a range of extras to start you off on a new journey, how do you start making your new house feel like home – and see beyond the boxes and ‘stuff’ which needs unpacking?
But don’t feel you need to rush out and buy new furniture, curtains or even purchase a pet to make your new property feel lived-in – your favourite music and some flowers will help do the trick.
Linden Homes Midlands’ sales director Clare Phillips said: “It can often feel a little strange, moving into the brand new home you have waited for – and suddenly this spacious, empty shell is all yours!
“A new home presents new surroundings, and many people get ideas and inspiration from their visits to the show home throughout the course of their journey.
“Mountains of boxes to unpack can seem daunting, but hopefully having a brand new home with lots of space and versatility to achieve your lifestyle requirements will make the task a little easier.”
And the advice comes in light of a new survey* which suggests that more than half of people who have moved house in the last five years are still to unpack boxes in their home 10 months after moving in!
The research reveals one in four movers said they had left boxes unpacked for the entire duration of their stay in a property.
Sandwich toasters, cocktail shakers and non-essential kitchen items were the things most likely to remain boxed, while the kettle and phone/tablet chargers were typically the first items to see the light of day.
The research also found that men were more likely than women to be living out of boxes, as were singletons compared to couples.
Here are some tips on making your new house feel like home:
