The beautiful cricket pavilion at Cholsey Meadows in the village of Cholsey has been officially handed over by Linden Homes to the Cholsey Community Development Trust.
The Pavilion is on the site of Linden Homes’ Cholsey Meadows development – a development that still has the cricket oval at its heart - and Linden Homes has had the old building refurbished and restored to its former glory.
In its heyday in the seventies and eighties Cholsey Cricket Pavilion even played host to Kent CC in benefit matches against the team from Fairmile hospital – matches which saw the likes of England Cricket Captain Colin Cowdrey take to the crease.
But several decades on from these glory days and the old pavilion fell into a somewhat tumble down state. Subsequently, when Linden Homes was planning the Cholsey Meadows development, the Cricket Pavilion and the neighbouring Great Hall were included in the refurbishment plans.
The pavilion was officially handed over to the Cholsey Community Development Trust on Friday 14th December. Fiona Mullins, from the Trust, says it will be a very welcome and timely addition to the local community:
“The handover was just in time for our Christmas party, which we held in the pavilion on Sunday. Around 100 people turned up for mulled wine and mince pies - It was a brilliant occasion. The community is really happy to have the pavilion back – the cricket club will have priority but it will also be a great space for smaller gatherings and groups. We’ve already got local people asking about how they can book it.”
