Question – What do liquorice, an old school jumper and a lunchtime meal menu all have in common?
Answer – they are all part of the history of Pontefract’s Cherry Tree Academy and items buried in a time capsule at a new homes development site close to the school.
Youngsters from the former Cobblers Lane Primary School put together the capsule, which included mementoes from the classroom, present day newspaper and TV guide, and were asked to bury it at Linden Homes West Yorkshire’s Manor Park site in the town.
This was the second visit in a few weeks by the primary school children, who were invited to the Cobbler’s Lane development to find out first hand about the world of bricks and mortar and health and safety associated with construction sites.
Teacher Sarah Dealtry headed up the time capsule project. She said: “We had a lot of fun thinking about the contents of the capsule and what represents the school and the children in 2017. We hope it paints an accurate picture of the school and Pontefract for the future generation.
“We also included some items very much associated with the town – including Haribo sweets and liquorice, because of the school being built on liquorice fields. The Year 5 children very much enjoyed their visit, learning a lot about the process of building the houses, site safety, and equipment – and seeing the homes at different stages. They were very impressed with the show home – in particular the unicorn themed bedroom!”
Pat Tennyson, sales manager at Linden Homes West Yorkshire, added: “This has been a really fun and interesting project and we would like to say a huge thanks to the pupils and Miss Dealtry for their enthusiasm.”
The capsule was buried on an open space at Manor Park.
A selection of two, three and four-bedroom homes are currently being built at Manor Park, ideal for first time buyers, young professional and families. The development is perfectly positioned for commuters, located within easy access to the wider region via the M62 and three local train stations.
