Pupils from Horndean Junior School swapped the classroom for the building site when they visited Linden Homes’ new collection of homes at ‘The Old Brewery’ in the village.
Youngsters donned hard hats and high vis vests for a tour of the site off London Road. They were given a safety talk and got the chance to try their hand at laying bricks and building their own test wall.
The 20 budding builders from Year 4 were also shown the new homes under construction.
In the run-up to the summer holidays now is an important time to stress to children that building sites are not playgrounds.
Project and site managers, Ray Lenton and Trevor Woolford explained the dangers and pupils went home with leaflets. They even got to keep their high vis safety vests to wear walking into school or cycling.
The redevelopment of the former Gale and Co brewery has preserved the Victorian-built red brick tower that has been a landmark of the village for 150 years.
Kate Utting, headteacher at Horndean Junior School, said: “We want to thank Linden Homes for hosting the children at The Old Brewery site, the event was a huge success.
“The children loved the time they spent there and particularly enjoyed building the brick wall. Their high visibility tabards will come in handy – they are still wearing them in this heat!”
Linden Homes Southern sales and marketing director Mark Docherty said: “We were delighted to welcome the youngsters from Horndean Junior School. It was a great chance to teach them crucial safety lessons but also to open their eyes to careers in building.
