Trust worker breathes village life into new development

Community: a disused hospital site was transformed into Cholsey Meadows

Community: a disused hospital site was transformed into Cholsey Meadows

Village life is being breathed into the site of a former derelict hospital with the appointment of a special community worker.

The Cholsey Meadows scheme has transformed the old hospital facilities, which closed in 2003, into over 100 apartments and 200 houses in the parkland grounds.

To ensure the new residents quickly become part of the village community, the Cholsey Community Development Trust has appointed Anthony Armitage, who lives locally, to take the lead to implement activities backed over the next three years by a significant kick-start fund from the developers.

A percentage of the homes there are social rented or shared ownership, and working in partnership with registered provider SOHA housing, Anthony is set to help the trust deliver its objectives and guide it towards becoming self-funding.

Trust initiatives include the development of local activities and projects which will meet the needs and interests of local residents, as well as setting up the new cricket pavilion and next year, the Great Hall, as community facilities which will be rented out and used for community benefit.

More importantly, and at the heart of the initiative, Anthony will help to integrate all new residents at Cholsey Meadows with the established and charming village of Cholsey.

Linden Homes Chiltern technical director Jeremy Alden, who is chairman of the trust, said: “This appointment confirms our determination to ease these new homes gently into the rhythm of Cholsey’s village life in a way which will bring real and lasting benefits to the whole community.”
