Students' designs give development local flavour

Bright ideas: students Kacey Apperley and Craig Powell

Students in Gloucester were given the chance to play an important part in a proposed development by Linden Homes Western in the city.

The graphic design students at Gloucestershire College were invited to come up with bright ideas for a name and scheme identity for the proposed development on the site of the old college campus in Gloucester city centre.

The proposed development for 254 homes, a cafe/restaurant, health centre and public spaces will incorporate some historic features of the existing buildings.

Students at all levels of their studies entered and after consideration it was decided to combine the efforts of two students: Craig Powell for his design, and Kacey Apperley for her name choice and Greyfriars Quarter will now become the scheme name. The winning students will now get to see their work used across all marketing and sales material when the site is launched.

Linden Homes Western marketing manager Sarah Hembrow visited the students to give them an insight into how their entries were judged and to talk through the importance of getting the right identity to launch and market a site.

It is hoped that as the development progresses there will be opportunities for more involvement with the college in areas such as photography, construction and marketing.

The region's managing director, Nigel Palmer, said: “The students all really impressed us with some great ideas. It was a really difficult decision but we are delighted with the end result.

“Involving people in the community with our projects like this is something we are committed to at Linden Homes, and it helps gives our developments a truly local flavour.”
