St Albans development discovers ancient archaeology

Sensitive: building the homes at King Harry Park uncovered important finds

Sensitive: building the homes at King Harry Park uncovered important finds

A treasure trove of Roman coins was among an array of archaeology to be carefully recorded or preserved at one of our developments in St Albans.

The team from our Chiltern region took great pains during construction of the stunning collection of homes at King Harry Park to identify finds and features that ranged from the Bronze Age through to the late Roman era.

Our careful processes uncovered burnt mounds from 2800-600BC, a 1st Century early Romano-British cremation cemetery containing the remains of urns, and a small hoard of 142 Roman coins.

King Harry Park is just a 15-minute walk to the city centre and is opposite the famous Verulamium Park with the remnants of its ancient Roman walls. We worked in partnership with a number of local groups carefully to monitor our excavations.

Roy King of Foundations Archaeology, overseeing the works, commented “The excavation of the parts of the Wheeler Ditch, in particular, represents one of the largest pieces of work on such a significant Iron Age feature in recent years.”

Linden Homes Chiltern managing director Darren Maddox said: “The archaeology that has surfaced during construction has contributed to St Albans residents’ understanding of their city’s history and we’re delighted to have played our part.

“Sensitive sites like this always pose a challenge but that’s when we also get the chance to prove our commitment to communities and go that extra mile.”
