Sandcastles pose a new construction challenge!

Diggers and concrete mixers were swapped for buckets and spades when our parent company, Galliford Try, supported a Northumberland school in a sandcastle competition.

Representatives from the company worked with Year 3 pupils and teaching staff from West End First School to create the four apostles in sand on Sandhaven beach in South Shields.

Their entry was in an event organised by children’s charity Children North East which challenged over 2,000 youngsters and adults to construct Lindisfarne Gospel-themed creations.

The hard work paid off as the judging panel, headed by actor Tim Healy, chose West End First School’s team as one of five winners for their sand sculpture of the apostle John.

Teacher Jonathan Smith said: “The children loved meeting members of the Galliford Try team and were able to discover the huge range of opportunities available in the construction industry.”

Debra Phillips, HR advisor at Galliford Try Partnerships North, added: “The pupils worked really hard on their designs and were full of ideas when we visited the school prior to the event. Initiatives like this provide a great opportunity for companies to get closer to the communities in which they work.”
