Rescuing an architectural icon from an uncertain future

Preserved: the Grade II listed Ashlar Court is being refurbished into much-needed homes

Preserved: the Grade II listed Ashlar Court is being refurbished into much-needed homes

The iconic Grade II listed Ashlar Court in Hammersmith faced the prospect of decay before our South East region secured its future as new homes.

The red brick building is a national example of Modernist design by one of the 1930s’ ground-breaking architect firms, Burnet, Tait and Lorne – boasting a stunning array of classic features.

The local landmark had lain empty for several years and there were fears it might deteriorate. But it is now being reborn as a refurbished collection of stylish new apartments, retaining, for example, its brass clocks, bronze fireplaces and woodblock floors.

Ashlar Court was built in 1936 to house 200 nurses working at the neighbouring Royal Masonic Hospital, which was itself opened in 1933 by King George V and for a while was the largest independent acute hospital in Europe.

Linden Homes South East technical director, Ian Curry, said: “Ashlar Court is a beautiful building with an authentic architectural pedigree, so it would have been a tragedy to see it stay empty and gradually decay.

“We’re very proud to have breathed new life into it with an array of unique homes that can offer a modern lifestyle while respecting and even enhancing the splendid design that surrounds them. It’s an eclectic collection of apartments that will become a real asset to the area.”
