Pupils swapped the classroom for the building site when they donned their hard hats to tour Linden Homes’ new Heritage Gate development in Bexley, Kent.

Twelve youngsters aged 7-11 from nearby Old Bexley Church of England Primary School went with their teacher, Mrs Gibbon, to see for themselves how builders and heavy machinery work and learn vital safety tips.

They also got the chance to try their hand at building walls while wearing high vis jackets and hard hats. The youngsters were part of the school’s Earth Matters class and were each treated to a goodie bag before they left.

They were taken around by site manager John Webb joined by building safety mascot Ivor Goodsite. He explained why building sites are so dangerous to play in and how Linden Homes reuses material to minimise its impact on the environment.

Teacher Mrs Gibbon said: “Learning up-close like this was a really valuable experience that our pupils enjoyed a lot, so we’re very grateful to Linden Homes for investing the time to show them round.”

Linden Homes South East managing director Steve Bangs added: “It was exciting for them to see the construction process at first-hand and learn some important safety lessons. I hope some of them might even be inspired to become the builders of the future.”
