Mayor joins special guests to view Royal Barham House

New life: the former infirmary at Truro is being transformed into quality apartments

New life: the former infirmary at Truro is being transformed into quality apartments

The mayor of Truro was joined on a special visit by nurses who once worked at a former hospital which our South West region has transformed into superb apartments.

The old infirmary - now known as Royal Barham House - opened its doors for special guests, including councillors, local businesses and people involved in the development, to see how the building had been refurbished and to walk round the stunning new show home.

Mayor Lindsay Southcombe and some of the staff who used to work at the hospital also took in the grand view which overlooks Truro cathedral and the viaduct, and looked at some of the older parts in progress.

The building was originally constructed in the late 1790s as Cornwall’s first hospital. It served the community for over 200 years before closing in 1999. The restoration is a joint project between Linden Homes South West and Westco Properties, the development arm of Devon and Cornwall Housing.

Linden Homes South West managing director Nigel Palmer said: “Royal Barham House is absolutely stunning and it’s arguably one of our best developments, rich in heritage and built to a very high specification.

“This event is a key landmark in the building’s history as you can clearly see the before and after stages of the development. We’re delighted the Mayor and some of the nurses who worked in the former hospital are able to attend and look forward to showing them round.”
