Ice creams all round after sandcastle challenge win

Win: (l-r) Galliford Try's Debra Phillips with Jonathan Smith and Children North East’s Carol Taylor

There were ice creams all round to celebrate a school in Northumberland’s achievements in a sandcastle competition with help from our parent company, Galliford Try.

Pupils at Bedlington West End First School enjoyed their lollies as a reward for having the competition licked at this year’s Sandcastle Challenge organised on Sandhaven beach in South Shields by youth charity Children North East.

The contest teamed construction experts with children to build Lindisfarne Gospel-themed creations. The youngsters won a top prize for their sand sculpture of the apostle John while Galliford Try was presented with the Best Business Partner trophy.

Altogether over 1,800 children from 57 schools joined in. Later the Sandcastle Ball, attended by construction partners, raised over £32,000 for Children North East which is the region’s oldest independent children’s charity.

Teacher Jonathan Smith said: “Being involved in the Sandcastle Challenge provides the children with a fantastic opportunity to work closely with a partner company on a big project.

“The children were delighted to be chosen as one of the winning teams, as they had worked incredibly hard in the classroom on their designs and they learned a lot about the Lindisfarne Gospels in the process.”
