Finish line: Emma is greeted by the Mackay clan after completing the Exeter half-marathon
Nearly £750 was raised for Motor Neurone Disease research when Emma Mackay, from our South West region, completed the Exeter half-marathon.
Emma ran the 13.1 miles over roads, footpaths and cycle tracks around the River Exe and Exeter Canal after being inspired by her father-in-law, Brian Mackay (70), who was diagnosed in January 2011 with MND.
Emma said: “When Brian revealed he often dreams of running, he really inspired me to run a half marathon. I hadn’t run a distance like that before so it involved a lot of training but it’s enabled us to raise much needed money and awareness for a very worthwhile cause close to our hearts.
“MND is a progressive disease that attacks the nerves or motor neurones in the brain and spinal cord; it can affect how you walk, talk, eat, drink and breathe and there is no cure – yet.
“Brian's positivity and Scottish fighting spirit means he's prepared for battle and he is surrounded by family and friends who love and support him every step of the way.”
Denise Davies, head of community fundraising at the MND Association, said: “Without the amazing support of people like Emma Mackay, the MND Association simply would not be able to provide its vital support services and fund research to find a cure. Together we are making a real difference for people affected by this devastating disease.”
