Groundbreaking community development in London

Vision: an artist's impression of how the development in Tower Hamlets might look

Vision: an artist's impression of how the development in Tower Hamlets might look

We’re trailblazing a new form of community development in London to bring fresh life to a disused former workhouse and mental health hospital.

Our plans aim to transform the Grade II listed St Clement's Hospital site in Mile End, Tower Hamlets, into a bustling new neighbourhood of 252 homes, local facilities, café/restaurant and improvements to public space.

What’s special about this project is that our Eastern region is working with the Greater London Assembly and the East London Community Land Trust to deliver a truly resident-led development that delivers a new heart to the area as well as homes.

It’s had the backing of London mayor Boris Johnson and will open up an area that has been closed off to the public for years.

Linden Homes Eastern’s director and general manager, Adrian Bohr, said: “There is now a great opportunity to transform a private and forbidding space into a welcoming and inclusive public space, bringing together communities, residents, visitors and workers.”

David Smith, of the East London Community Land Trust, added: "We're delighted to see the plans for St Clements being submitted. This is a new model for London, it’s going to be an exciting new part of Mile End, designed with and for the local community.”
