Developer Linden Homes West Yorkshire is supporting local parents in their quest to save their school crossing patrol in Crigglestone, following the removal of district council funding for the service.
The Dane Royd school has around 350 pupils, many of whom walk to school and almost all who benefit from the crossing patrol at the beginning and end of the school day.
The school’s Parent Teacher Association – a newly formed group to raise funds to offer pupils and parents in the wider Wakefield community the best opportunities possible – has embarked on a series of initiatives to raise the annual £2,500 needed to keep what they regard as a ‘vital service’.
PTA chair Kerry Jefferson said: “We are extremely grateful to Linden Homes for their eagerness to support this vital service.
“Wakefield Metropolitan District Council has removed funding for our school crossing patrol, passing the cost on to the school at a time when school funding is being dramatically cut, this is not an additional cost the school can maintain in the long term, and therefore the PTA has been approached to assist with raising the £2,500 needed per year.
“We are located on a busy road, with many of the pupils walking to school. The safety of all the children is paramount.”
The school is located close to Linden Homes West Yorkshire’s Kings Glade development at Newmillerdam, and presents an opportunity it to support the local community.
Sales director Gina Holmes said: “As this is such an important service for the many families who live in the area, the school crossing patrol provides a high element of safety and peace of mind not only for the many children walking to and from school, but for their parents. We are more than happy to support the cause and wish the PTA well with its fundraising.”
The PTA has raised £750 to date – through a series of activities including funds raised from the Christmas Fayre and the sale of refreshments and programmes at four Christmas productions, as well as a Christmas Raffle.
