Staff from Newton Abbot-based housebuilding and construction group, Linden Homes and Galliford Try, took part in a non-stop cycle relay from Land’s End to John o’ Groats in aid of Cancer Research.
Having set off from Land’s End on 11 June, the team completed the event in 14 stages and arrived at John O’Groats, the final destination, at 5:15pm on 14 June. The cyclists covered around 981 miles in 84 hours, giving an average cycling speed of 11.7mph.
Almost 100 employees from across the Group completed the relay and have already raised more than £32,000 in sponsorship from friends, family and colleagues for Cancer Research UK, with further donations still being received.
Galliford Try Infrastructure engineering director, Jon Hodgins, who organised the event and took part in the first leg of the relay, said: “In completing the relay, we overcame a number of challenges including many steep climbs, strong headwinds and riding at unsociable hours - even through the night on some stages. However, we were also able to ride through some stunning scenery along the route and, although it was a gruelling event, we are pleased to have raised a significant sum of money for our chosen charity.”
Greg Fitzgerald, executive chairman, added: “Well done to everyone who took part in the cycle relay and cycled through day, night, wind and rain to raise funds for this worthy cause. An event such as this takes hard work and commitment and reflects what we are capable of when we come together – and that includes everyone who has been involved in the event – from the cyclists and their support car drivers, to their supporters and those who have donated.”
