With school out for summer, there is a warning to adventure-seeking children – and their parents – about the dangers of building sites.
As many schools across the south have now broken up for the long summer holiday, Linden Homes has issued the timely reminder; particularly as construction work will continue as normal at many of its development during the coming weeks.
Woodcroft Primary School in Lovedean is based directly next to Linden Homes’ Catherington Park development. Ricky Briscoe and Charlie Fletcher, Catherington Park Assistant Site Manager and Sales Executive respectively, visited the school at the beginning of the week to highlight the dangers of playing on construction sites.
Ricky said: “Each year, a number of children are injured as a result of construction site accidents in the UK, as youngsters seek out a seemingly exciting places to play, so we wanted to raise awareness of this now, before it’s too late.
"Understandably some children are drawn to construction sites as new and interesting places to play, but they are not playgrounds and using them as such can have severe ramifications.
“The school holidays are an ideal opportunity for a timely reminder to both children and parents regarding the dangers that construction sites present – many of which continue to remain active throughout the summer. We are appealing to parents to check that their youngsters are in a safe environment when out playing.”
Barry Fanning, Headteacher from Woodcroft Primary School, said: “We’re really gratefully to Linden Homes for taking the time to come in and chat to our children about the dangers of playing on construction sites, particularly given how close Catherington Park is to the school.
“Some pupils walk past it to get to school so they are fully aware of the machinery being used and we wanted to quash any temptation to want to play there during the summer holidays, as well as generally educating them about what happens on a building site.”
Linden Homes has strict and visible guidelines in place at each construction site, and there is also safety advice on the company website for legitimate visitors to any of its developments.
Ricky added: “Our developments have clear signage and are secured when not in use, however, much of the machinery and materials that we use remain on site, which could have very serious consequences if in the wrong hands.
“Anyone found on site without prior agreement will be escorted out of the area. We cannot and will not take a relaxed view of safety.”
