Tache force: some Linden Homes ‘Mo Bros’ with their ‘Mo Sistas’ raising awareness of men’s health
Men’s cancers can be a hidden killer, so this year our South West region launched its own campaign to join the annual Movember month of moustache-themed awareness-raising.
With men making up a large proportion of our on-site building teams, they were the right target group for a series of open and honest posters warning of the symptoms and offering advice.
The campaign highlighted testicular cancer and prostate cancer and rather than posters going up in the canteen where we found they often weren’t read, they were put up in the toilets for a captive audience!
The tactics have been used before for a wide range of subjects such as hand injuries and cement burns. In a survey to find out how successful they were, it turned out 90 per cent of the men interviewed could recall the content of the posters.
Nigel Palmer, Linden Homes South West’s managing director, said: “On the building site we look out for each other all the time to make sure we’re working safely. It makes perfect sense to do the same for our health too – and it seems to be paying off.”
