The estimated annual cost of running an average sized three-bedroom home in the UK is almost £20,000 a year – that’s £1,634 a month.
This is according to the report by More Th>n Cost of Running A Home Report, which looked at the cost of running own and rented properties in 72 towns across the UK.
For a household with two working adults each earning the average yearly salary, around 43 per cent (rented) and 45 per cent (own) of post tax earnings are being spent purely on household bills and the rent or mortgage.
However, a new property - built to current energy saving standards and regulations could be around half the cost of running an older counterpart - say Linden Homes Midlands and the NHBC Foundation.

Most new homes have thermostat controlled heating - turning it down by just one degree can save around £30 a year.
Energy efficient light bulbs use less energy and last up to 10 times longer than standard bulbs.
