Building new homes again - but this time for wildlife

Pondlife: Linden Homes staff donated frogspawn from their own garden ponds

Our team in the west are more used to helping people move house but this time it gave a hand to Somerset wildlife – by moving ponds.

When the Strawberry Fields development in the historic Somerset village of Cheddar was being planned, a filled-in pond was discovered on the site. Keen to support the local flora and fauna, the company set to work to create a new one.

Staff helped to give the new pond a helping hand by donating frogspawn from their own garden ponds and a new frog population soon established itself in Cheddar. Recently newts have been spotted moving in and with the arrival of spring plants and other wildlife are starting to flourish.

Linden Homes Western managing director Nigel Palmer said: "We love building new homes - even for local wildlife - so it was a real bonus to have been able to reinstate this natural feature for the community.

“It’s important to us to show that we are a responsible home builder and this conservation project has enabled us to create a long lasting legacy for the development and for the town itself, one  which can be enjoyed by both nature and residents for many years to come."

Strawberry Meadows is an exclusive development of just seven three- and four-bedroom homes. Home to the natural phenomenon of Britain’s largest Gorge and underground river, Cheddar is well placed for families and commuters alike with the City of Bristol around 35 minutes away and the beach town of Weston-Super-Mare around a 20 minutes drive.
