Youngsters at a boxing club in North Tyneside were happy to have us in their corner when our parent company, Galliford Try, donated a haul of vests and tracksuits.
Howdon Boxing Academy, in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, provides sporting diversions for young people aged 10 and older, such as boxing, martial arts, Thai boxing and fitness training.
Dave Whitfield, who works as a labourer for Galliford Try Partnerships North, based at Great Park, is also a coach at the academy and was delighted with the company’s support, freeing up money for extra spending.
He said: “The academy has had a really positive impact in the local area, getting young people off the streets and engaging them in something new. It is about helping people develop personally as well as physically and we strive to bring out the best in our members.”
Although only founded in 2009, academy members have won three regional boxing championships, three times reached national quarter-finals, and in 2012 two of the team competed for an England select squad against boxers from Sweden and Spain.
Foster Innes, operations director at Galliford Try Partnerships North, said: “We are delighted to have linked up with Howdon Boxing Academy and to help them to continue to provide this excellent facility for young people in the area.”
