Careers in Housebuilding’ initiative a resounding success
Students from Bow School were given a taste of what a career in housebuilding could look like, when they visited St Clements in Bow. The visit coordinated as part of our ‘Careers in Housebuilding’ programme saw 15 students visit the flagship housing development.
The programme is designed to engage graduates and school and college leavers to better understand the opportunities available in housebuilding. It gave the students a chance to see the construction industry in action and learn about the various career options available upon leaving school, college and university.
During their visit, the attendees were given a tour of the development, gained insight into the sheer volume of job roles available under one roof, participated in a live Q&A with the project team and received helpful careers advice from our staff.
In particular, the students were talked through the various routes they could take to land themselves a career in housebuilding which includes roles as diverse as bricklaying, marketing, through to land and planning. The attendees were talked through work placement opportunities, part-time study courses and qualifications, and the two-year graduate development programme with Linden Homes available for registration.
Romello Forbes a pupil from Bow School thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Linden Homes development. They commented: “I had no idea there were so many jobs available from one business; it’s so varied and there seems to be a job to suit every type of person matching their skills and strengths. I’m really glad I attended as it has given me some real insight into the kinds of job roles that Linden Homes offers. I was particularly interested in the brick laying activity because it was harder than I thought to achieve, however would be something that I may be interested in pursuing.
Mark Ciano, construction director at Linden Homes Eastern said: “It was so encouraging to see all of the talented pupils from Bow School. They were so enthusiastic and the event did exactly what we wanted to achieve; to get the young people excited about housebuilding as a viable career option. We need so many skills under one roof in order to build each and every home, from technical abilities through to more vocational skills to create each property.
“I would encourage anyone who is soon to be leaving school, college or university to consider housebuilding as a desirable career path. Homes always need to be built and we need the best next generation of talent to meet the increasing demands for housing supply. We hope our Careers in Housebuilding event goes on to inspire our budding housebuilders to seriously consider a career path in our industry in order to promise and inspire the homes of tomorrow.”
Mr Hall, Assistant Head Teacher at Bow School commented: “We are really grateful to the company for hosting us at the Careers in Housebuilding event at St Clements. It was fantastic to see the students so engaged with the Linden Homes team. It’s an important time in their lives to consider the options available to them and you can’t beat showing the students a real-life working environment. It brings everything to life and I think they were quite surprised to learn about the variety of jobs available in one sector.”
