Bird feeders give pupils a lesson in winter wildlife

Food for thought: the bird feeders are helping pupils learn more about winter wildlife

Food for thought: the bird feeders are helping pupils learn more about winter wildlife

Two Birmingham schools are enjoying lessons in winter wildlife after our West Midlands region donated bird feeders and food.

The supplies for their feathered friends were delivered to Yardley Primary School and Blakesley Hall Primary School where youngsters will take responsibility for making sure they are kept topped up.

Hanging from the trees, it is hoped they will attract a variety of species and help them through the winter. The schools are near our new development of high quality homes at The Laurels, in Garrets Green.

Blakesley Hall Primary School deputy headteacher Mr Mason said: “The kind donation of the food and feeders by Linden Homes is something which we feel is important and gives the children a certain amount of responsibility by ensuring they are topped-up. We will try to include as many pupils as possible in this exercise.”

Yardley Primary School teacher Kate West added: “The children were very excited to take receipt of the food and feeders and will, I’m sure, enjoy keeping the birds fed and keeping an eye on the species of birds that come to visit.”

Linda Huntington, sales manager for Linden Homes West Midlands, said: “Wildlife is extremely important to us, especially in our inner-city areas, and so by working with both schools we hope that the children will learn that looking after wildlife – especially during the winter months – is as important as it is in the summer.”
