Willesden Green Wassail celebrates fabulous fifth year!

Fruitful: residents turned Wassail from hoping for a bumper harvest into a community celebration

Fruitful: residents turned Wassail from hoping for a bumper harvest into a community celebration

An ancient rural tradition was enthusiastically transported close to the urban heart of London with the support of our Chiltern region.

The historic practice of Wassail is usually held in the hope that fruit orchards will have a successful summer harvest – but in Willesden Green community-minded residents have been running it for the last five years to celebrate their neighbourhood spirit instead.

The Willesden Green Wassail was marked on February 2nd with an afternoon musical parade down the high street, featuring performers and singers, before ending outside Willesden Green Library.

Poet Errol McGlashan, who also participated in 2013, said: “I met some brilliant people last year and I get recognised even up to this day by people who saw me performing there. I was buzzing for weeks afterwards because of the community spirit.”

Willesden Green Wassail founder Rachel Rose Reid added: “Recent developments on the High Street can make locals feel as if the character of Willesden Green is beyond our control, but each of us is responsible for creating the kind of community we live in by how we treat each other in our daily interactions.

“There are acts of intolerance and racism reported across the country every day.  It is important that people who are peaceful can be just as loud by committing joyful acts of unity and celebration of each other.”
