Plymouth University students swapped the lecture hall for the building site when we gave them the chance to witness construction management at first hand.

Linden Homes staff at Higher Moor, in South Brent, over three days hosted nearly 70 undergraduates studying Architectural Technology, Building Surveying and Environment Construction Management.

Students quizzed site manger Glyn Hilton about costs, scheduling and organisation and were shown sustainable features being incorporated into the new homes, including solar panels and water recycling systems.

Lecturer Dr Brian Pilkington said: “Many thanks to Linden Homes for the site visit to Avonwick. The students were really pleased to be able to see in practice the construction technologies, materials, processes, management, etc. that they have been studying in class. The visit certainly has contributed successfully towards their learning.”

Linden Homes South West managing director Bill Cawse said: “It was a pleasure to help the students see real-life applications of the theory they’ve been learning in class. It highlights our dedication to pass on vital skills and knowledge to the next generation of building professionals.”

The visits marked the start of a new partnership between the university and Linden Homes, which it is hoped will also encourage more women to consider construction. More visits are planned for the new term.
