Bat colony preserved with action to revamp roosts

Bat cave: one of the roosts we restored at Kingston Mills, Bradford-on-Avon

Bat cave: one of the roosts we restored at Kingston Mills, Bradford-on-Avon

At a development in Wiltshire it wasn’t just people we were building homes for – but bats too after we discovered colonies living in several old buildings.

Summer roosts and feeding perches used by the rare lesser horseshoe bat and brown long-eared bat were found among the site where we are delivering apartments, houses and community facilities at Kingston Mills in Bradford-on-Avon.

With help from ecology advisors Environmental Gain, we installed bat boxes to offer them homes in some of the new buildings, and restored several older structures whose condition put them in danger of no longer being fit to shelter the animals, which are protected under law.

And in a green area we have kept as a wild habitat, a World War Two pillbox was converted into a spot for the bats to hibernate. Monitoring of the site has shown no decline in the bat population from before construction work started.

Linden Homes Western sales director Adrian Bird said: “As with all our developments, we don’t measure results just by the high quality of apartments we build; it’s also by the impact it has on the community and the environment.

“Neighbourhoods treasure the wildlife that lives alongside them and I’m very pleased that the measures we have taken means that the bat population is continuing to be sustained.”
