While the house itself has been standing for hundreds of years, little is known about the history behind its creation. What is known is that the house was occupied by the RAF during the Second World War, and in 1979, a partnership was formed with the National Portrait Gallery. This meant that a large selection of 18th century portraits could be put on display around the house, making it even more of a draw for the house’s 140,000 visitors every year. Outside the house are some truly beautiful gardens. Ideal for those with children, there are a number of activities to keep everyone in the family occupied, from bike and wildlife trails to a pre-school playroom and art workshops. And if you need to take a break for something to eat and drink, the Walled Garden restaurant has a good selection of light meals, main courses and snacks that include ingredients from the site’s well-maintained gardens.
