Ilchester: from idyllic village life to vibrant street parties, this area of Somerset has something for everyone

The pretty village of Ilchester with the river Yeo running through its north is situated just off the Roman road of Fosse Way with an especially attractive, unspoilt countryside landscape on approach to the village. Nearby Yeovil, which means ‘town on the river’, is known as the entertainment and shopping centre for South Somerset. Its historic centre is built around the C14 church of St John the Baptist, which sits amongst fine old buildings, a theatre, arts and crafts, and opportunities for retail therapy. Church Street, in Ilchester itself, is home to an authentic Italian restaurant in Nuova Italia, and Northover Manor, a family-run hotel that boasts a popular restaurant serving seasonal dishes made from locally sourced produce in a relaxed environment. Visit Just Maria for fresh flowers, painted furniture, and beautiful home items, or attend a paintings workshop for lessons in fabric painting, stenciling, and botanical water colours.

What’s close to Ilchester?

There’s much to see and do near our houses for sale in Somerset. Steeped in history, and quintessentially English, the towns and villages each offer a unique experience. Between the Somerset Museum, based at the 12th Century Taunton Castle documenting the county’s history, and the Taunton Heritage Trail’s self-guided tour of the town’s historical sites, visitors can truly understand the Roman legacy that surrounds the area. Bath Place, located on the trail, is awash with 19th Century shop fronts full of independent retailers and cafes is illustrative of the town’s reputation for varied shopping and a brilliant selection of eateries and bars. At Vivary Park, visitors can enjoy ‘The Chelsea of the West’ during the annual flower show or experience the unique collection of three historic gardens spanning three centuries of design at Hestercombe Gardens.

For something a little livelier, Bridgewater is home to Somerset’s highly acclaimed street carnivals, including the largest illuminated procession in Europe. The Bridgewater Guy Fawkes Carnival, held every November, has won two tourism awards. In the days leading up to the carnival, the Carnival Concerts are a great spectacle for audiences who experience the clubs warming up their dance routines and choreography before the main Carnival event. Aside from dance and drama, Bridgewater offers local culture at the Bridgewater Arts Centre, the Somerset Brick and Tile Museum, and the Bridgewater and Taunton Canal and Docks.

Many of south Somerset’s country villages are made up of quaint cottages, thatched roofs, and sandy coloured stone. Listed buildings and echoes of the area’s heritage typify the area. Around 20 minutes away from Hainbury Meadows is Crewkerne, offering eateries, a Waitrose, A Lidl, and the Crewkerne Aqua Centre with a swim school and gym. Barrington’s Community Coffee Morning and Produce Market takes place on the fourth Saturday of the month selling local produce, cakes and delicious bacon butties. Just 10 minutes away, Montacute village is home to a masterpiece of Elizabethan Renaissance architecture and design in Montacute House as well as the Tearooms, the TV Radio Toy Museum, and The Borough at the centre of the village is home to the Phelips Arms, serving excellent traditional pub food.

Local Schools & Education

Families with children of school years will find many schools in the area with a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating. In Ilchester itself, Northover House Day Nursery is practically on the doorstep, and St Mary’s Pre-School and Ilchester Community School are both less than a mile from Hainbury Meadows to cater for primary educational needs.

For secondary schools, Westfield Academy in Yeovil at approximately 4.4 miles away is Ofsted-rated as ‘Good’. Stanchester Academy in Stoke-sub-Hamdon, also Ofsted-rated Good is the same distance away. Huish Episcopi Academy, also with an Ofsted rating of ‘Good’ is 7 miles west of Ilchester in Langport and is a state secondary school for pupils aged 11 to 16 with a Sixth Form for Further Education. Fairmead School in Yeovil is 5 miles away and caters for students with moderate learning difficulties and complex needs aged between 4 and 19 years.

Somerset University Centre is part of Bridgwater & Taunton College and works in partnership with Plymouth University, Oxford Brookes University, University of the West of England, and The Open University to offer a range of higher education learning routes.

Transport & Travel

Ilchester is extremely well connected with a number of major roads nearby as well as excellent train and bus services to the local area and beyond. The A37 and A303 are less than a mile away and connect Bristol to the north of the development with Dorchester to the south. Yeovil Pen Mill is the closest train station to our new property for sale in Somerset and is approximately 6.5 miles away. From here you can benefit from regular services to London Waterloo and Weymouth, both of which include stops at a number of local towns and villages. With regards to bus services, the closest stops are just a few minutes’ walk from Hainbury Meadows and provide excellent coverage of the local area from Taunton to Yeovil.
