Sonning Common: A quiet village on the outskirts of Reading

Nestled in the truly stunning South Oxfordshire countryside of the Chiltern Hills, with good schools, amenities and simple transport links, Sonning Grove offers the wonderful combination of a village lifestyle yet with everything you need and want within a short distance of these new homes.

Sonning Common is a peaceful rural community, with a good selection of everyday amenities and services located just a short walk from home. You will find a good-sized Co-op supermarket, a newsagent, post office, library, pharmacy, a small number of independent shops, pubs and a hugely popular restaurant owned by respected TV chef, Antony Worrall Thompson.

As well as the green open space all around you, there are other opportunities to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.

A short drive away is the National Trust’s Greys Court, a Tudor country house that dates back to the mid-13th century. And for those who enjoy a round or two of golf, you will find Sonning Grove is ideally located for a number of golf courses. There are two within a few miles of the development - Greys Green and Badgemore Park - both offering 18-hole courses.

What’s close to Sonning Grove?

There is a good choice of different places to visit close to the development. The large town of Reading is just 6 miles away and offers visitors a great selection of things to see and do. The Oracle Shopping Centre and the Broad Street Mall both have a vast range of high street brands and independent names, as well as large department stores. Socialising is simple here too, thanks to the great choice of places to eat and drink; restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs are in abundance in the centre of town. Away from the shops and eateries, there is Forbury Gardens and Reading Museum to explore, while for live entertainment, The Hexagon Theatre and Sub89 are the places to head to.

22 miles north of Sonning Grove is the popular city of Oxford. Famous for its University, this is a wonderful place to spend some time, whether you’re here to take in the architecture, soak up the atmosphere or seek some retail therapy in the numerous shopping areas. There is a huge mix of high street brands, boutique shops and independent names all around the city, along with popular places to eat and drink, including chain restaurants, pubs and independent cafes and coffee shops. For entertainment, there are theatres and live music venues with a host of live events and performances all year round.

Just 19 miles east of home will bring you to the town of High Wycombe. This is a great place to pick up essentials and find new things you want too; the choice of shops in the Eden Shopping Centre is superb, with high street clothing brands, jewellers, bookshops and supermarkets. There are also numerous places to stop for something to eat and drink, with everything from chain restaurants to cafes to pubs in and outside of the centre. Just beyond High Wycombe, in the Chiltern Hills, is Hughenden Manor, a red brick Victorian mansion, owned by the National Trust. This makes for a great day out for all the family, if you want to get away from the bustle of town for a while.

A little further away is the large town of Aylesbury. A daytrip here will give you plenty of history and heritage to discover, especially around the old town, where you’ll find Tudor, Georgian and Jacobean buildings. Entertainment is simple to find here, with a bowling alley, multiscreen cinema and a range of live music and performance venues. A good selection of shops can be found in the Hale Leys Shopping Centre, while beyond this you’ll be able to easily find something to eat and drink, whatever your taste or budget.

Local schools and education

Families with children will appreciate the good choice of Ofsted rated schools close to their new build. Sonning Common Pre-School and Primary School (both rated ‘Good’) are just under a mile from home; Peppard CofE Primary (‘Good’) is 2 miles away; Kidmore End Primary (‘Outstanding’) is a mile away, and Emmer Green Primary (‘Outstanding’) is 3.5 miles away.

Transport and travel

Those who need to commute will be close to excellent road links. The M4, M40 and A34 can all be easily reached from Sonning Grove, and allow for journeys to Reading (6 miles), Oxford (22 miles), Maidenhead (16 miles) and Swindon (47 miles).

For train services, Reading station provides regular trains to London Paddington (28 minutes), Bristol Temple Meads (1 hour 28 minutes) and Didcot Parkway (13 minutes).

For air travel, Heathrow Airport is 29 miles away, and provides regular flights to all corners of the world.
