Okehampton, located on the northern edge of Dartmoor National Park

Property for sale in Okehampton has the benefit from being within a short distance of a good range of everyday amenities, outdoor spaces, points of interest, sports and leisure facilities for all the family and shops and markets. The centre of Okehampton is just over a mile from Meldon Fields, and is where you’ll find three major supermarkets, a choice of banks, pharmacies, a medical centre, a florist, an independent cinema and an antiques shop. For independent shops, the Red Lion Yard pedestrian shopping area can be accessed from the high street. If, however, you’re looking for fresh produce, there is a bi-monthly farmers market held in Fore Street. Okehampton is also home to a wide range of places to eat, with a choice of pubs, 16th century inns and fine dining restaurants.

Away from the shops and eateries, there is plenty more to see and do. The ruins of the 11th century Okehampton Castle are around 3 miles from home, and are where you can discover more about the site’s extensive history and take a walk in the surrounding woodland. A little more history closer to home can be found at the Museum of Dartmoor Life, located near the high street. Of course, Dartmoor itself can be easily reached (around 16 miles) so you can always visit to see all it has to offer.

For those who like to be active, there are many options open to you. Simmons Park, located around 10 minutes away by car, is a wonderful place to spend time with family. There are pleasant wildlife walks, attractive gardens and adventure play areas for the children. Close by is the Parklands Leisure Centre, where you can take part in group exercise classes, swimming and racquet sports.

What’s close to Okehampton?

There is much more to see and do in the areas close to Okehampton. The beautiful landscapes of Dartmoor are around 16 miles from home, which is where you can enjoy breath taking views across the expanse of open space. This is also the home of the iconic Dartmoor Ponies, which live as semi-wild herds across the moor. You’ll also find a host of walking and cycling trails, meaning days out with family can be as active or as relaxed as you want.

For a visit to the city, Exeter is around 22 miles from Meldon Fields. Vibrant, attractive and full of history, this is an extremely popular destination for day-trippers and commuters. There are a host of independent retailers and high street names to be found here - in and outside of the Guildhall Shopping Centre -  providing plenty of options for those looking for some retail therapy. If you’re looking for entertainment, you won’t be disappointed; the Picturehouse and Odeon cinemas are always popular; so too is The Sorry Head live music venue. For an activity with a difference, a guided tour of Exeter’s Underground Passages is a must. These dark and narrow passageways fascinate those who dare to go underground, and booking in advance is essential.

A little further away - at around 30 miles - is Barnstaple, North Devon’s main town. Shoppers will find a huge selection of high street brands and independent names here, with everything from department stores to small boutiques. Foodies will have a wide range of pubs, restaurants, bars and cafes to choose from, which cater for all tastes and budgets. For entertainment, the Queens Theatre has a packed calendar all year round of music, drama, comedy, film and children’s shows, while the 4-screen Scott Cinema is where you can catch the latest releases.

Local schools and education

Families looking for Ofsted rated schools for all ages close to these new homes for sale in Okehampton won’t be disappointed. For older students, the ‘Outstanding’ Okehampton College - a mixed secondary school - is around 5 minutes’ drive from home.

A different type of education experience can be found at Okehampton Forest School. Run by The Outdoors Group, there is a selection of adult courses, team building activities and school activities for children aged 6 and up.
