Sustainable Communities

About Linden Homes

Linden Homes is one of the top 10 house builders in the UK and is the building arm of the Galliford Try Group. With a reputation for bespoke and creative sustainable developments, Linden Homes prides itself on high quality design and has won numerous awards that testify to that, including House Builder of the Year at the Building Awards 2012.

Working with communities comes second nature to Linden Homes. We understand that, if we are to deliver houses that not only meet the aspirations of those who seek to live in them but also enhance the existing neighbourhood, then we need to talk to and engage with local people.

Linden Homes is proud to be part of the considerate constructor's scheme, and works hard with communities through the planning and construction process.

A case study at Ogwell Brook

For many people, the visible sign of Linden Homes' investment in their community will be the new homes that we build. We are certainly proud of the quality of our product but we also know that our investment stretches far beyond bricks and mortar; our houses provide homes for families, jobs for local businesses and opportunities for new apprentices. To demonstrate what this can mean for a community, we looked in depth at our £19.4 million residential scheme in Ogwell Brook, South Devon.

The positive benefits of our house building in Ogwell Brook:

  • Delivers 186 new homes (25% of which are affordable)
  • 95% of buyers live within 15 miles of the development
  • Those living outside of the 15 miles ALL have family living locally

The first two phases of the three phased development have:

  • Created 73 jobs on site for contractors. This is in addition to the 13 architects, engineers and surveyors retained on the project, in addition to our team of four locally-based Linden Homes' staff
  • Enabled 11 young apprentices to be employed
  • Used local firms to work on site
  • Used the majority of local businesses in the south west to supply materials

We believe our experience at Ogwell Brook is reflected across our entire site network: from our engagement during the planning process, to the day we hand over keys to a home, we are fulfilling a local need for employment, for housing and for a range of community benefits.

National Apprenticeship Programme

During 2013 Linden Homes is launching a national apprenticeship scheme with First 4 Skills (national training provider).

Our aim

  • To have 500 apprentices participating in our programme within the next three years

The importance of apprenticeships

  • Apprenticeships are key to sustaining and developing skills vital to UK house building
  • Without a skilled workforce, house building will struggle to deliver the new homes we need
  • A skilled workforce will help build more homes and drive growth in the UK economy

Achievements to date

  • 100 apprentices were recruited in 2011 and 2012 as part of our pilot programme run in Ogwell Brook

Over 90% of our waste is recycled or converted into energy.
