PUPILS, teachers and new homes staff braved the wet weather for a geography trip with a difference in Beverley.
GSCE Geography students from Baysgarth School were invited to Linden Homes North’s St Nicholasgate development to see for themselves how the site sympathetically blends new housing and the environment.
Accompanied by head of Geography Matthew Bee, head Geography teacher Rachael Cross and trainee teacher Charlie Griffiths, the students looked at the brick styles and street scenes, learned how the land was prepared prior to building the 130 homes and were given an insight into its past use.
Also on their timetable during the visit were environmental issues, like solar panels and other energy efficient building methods carefully considered and used by the house builder as part of its housing plans.
The students were also given the chance to find out about the future retail and leisure facilities planned for the area, with Linden Homes sales executive Sandra Longthorn leading the tour.
Linden Homes North sales manager Julie Hubbard said: “We were thrilled to host this visit by the GSCE geography student who were keen to find out as much as possible about the past, present and the future of this site.
“Our walk through of the development prompted discussions about everything from government planning regulations to feature raised flower beds and the street scenes.”
The St Nicholasgate development, which has almost sold out, is built on redundant 17.5 acre brownfield land site and forms part of a major regeneration project for Beverley – and was presented with an award for Best Brownfield development in 2013.
Located in the heart of Beverley it is within walking distance of the town centre.
Geography teacher Rachael Cross added: “Although the weather was really unkind to us on the day of the visit, the students took so much away from the tour of the development and their informative discussions with Linden Homes staff – thanks to everyone who helped to make the visit such an enjoyable success.”
